Microchip

Microchips are electronic devices the size of a grain of rice easily implanted in the nuchal ligament in the neck half way between the poll and withers, just below the mane.  Each chip has a unique number that can be easily read with a handheld scanner.  It provides a permanent identification for the horse that cannot be altered.  Microchips are required to compete at many shows, including USEF and FEI.  When the number is registered by the owner, they are also used as proof of ownership and can help reunite owners and horses in the face of natural disaster.
