UltrasonogRAphy
Ultrasonography uses high frequency sound waves to evaluate tissue in real time.
For lameness, it is mostly used to evaluate soft tissue injuries. The fibers of tendons and ligaments can be evaluated for enlargement or tears and changes to their attachment points. Ultrasound is also used to provide guidance for injection of deeper structures.
It can also look into the chest or abdomen to evaluate internal organs. This is especially useful for evaluating horses showing signs of colic or respiratory infections.
